It has been a very BIG year for him from moving to his big boy room to getting his first set of stitches to becoming the best big brother to about to start preschool and moving to his schools daycare. Lots of changes.

  • Loves giving the thumps up

Age: 4 years old
Height: 42 inches tall, 80%ile
Weight: 41 pounds 4 ounces, 85%ile

Health: Had his second ER visit and first set of stitches from building a bridge out of couch cushions and trying cross over it, he split his eyebrow open on the bottom corner of the coffee table. He only was given two stitches because he wouldn’t sit still for any more but did pretty darn good being in the ER for 2 plus hours. Other than that he has been in great health and is one active little boy!

Sleeping: Typically Madden is still a good sleeper. He usually goes to bed around 8-8:30pm. Some nights are better than others during bedtime, he prefers mommy to come back in and cuddle with him in bed until he’s close to falling asleep or asleep. Otherwise he comes up with the usually 5 million excuses NOT to go to bed….it’s kinda hard to get mad at a kid that says “I just want to kiss you” or “I want one more hug” and “I want to cuddle you”. He recently has become scared of thunderstorms and the sound of heavy rain so he will wake in the middle of the night from that.

Favorite Foods: Cheeseburgers, strawberries, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, corn on the cob, canned green beans, grapes, apples, cheese, bananas, macaroni and cheese, basically any pasta, toast with Nutella,  chocolate milk, ice cream, suckers, tootsie rolls.

Favorite TV Shows: Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Pack Man Adventures (Netflix’s), Paw Patrol, PJ Masks.

Favorite Movies: Peter Pan, Zootopia, The Great Mouse Detective, Fantasia, Looney Tunes, Dumbo, Robots, Madagascar.

Favorite Things: Harassing our dog Waveland, he loves to put her leash on her and attach it to a doorknob then leave her there. He still loves his River Bandits hat. He only prefers to wear 5 different types of shirts which include Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes, Captain America, Paw Patrol, and Avengers shirts. He will only wear athletic shorts or “cold” (athletic) pants.  Building things, like forts, beds, towers, and castles. Pretending to be a puppy. Playing doctor. His two blankies. Swimming and slip n'slides or waterslides. Monkey Joes and Jungle Bungle.

Dislikes/Struggles: Wearing socks, particularly when not wearing shoes. Thunderstorms and heavy rain at night. Loud noises such as fireworks or the airplanes at the airshow. Getting wet if he spills something on himself. Three fourths of this wardrobe doesn’t get worn! Taking naps at home on the weekends. The last month or so leading up to his birthday has been difficult, he has become much more whiny, hitting, not listening, throwing tantrums, getting upset, doesn't like being told no or not given what he wants.

Personality/Temperament: He loves giving the thumps up. He’s very curious and much smarter than we sometimes think. Dave is always trying to be hide snacks/treats from him but he has some sort of radar on him that knows when Dave is in the pantry or had something he doesn't want to share. Madden will say "What you got dad?" and then demand you to show it to him. He definitely has reached the Why stage and will continue to ask why until he gets an answer he likes or if you don't know the answer he says "yes you do, tell me why". He is still extremely animated, wears his emotions on his sleeve so to speak. He is observant, he notices when I get my hair done, or wear new clothes, or paint my toes a new color. He prefers to stand back and watch others do something before participating, especially in a new environment. He is shy and quiet when meeting someone new or a new place but will warm up and ask questions/play/etc. He is very good at playing independently and entertaining himself for stretches of time. He loved to show off have grandparents or mom/dad or a friend watch him and play with him. Even with the increase is meltdowns and attitude, Madden seriously is the sweetest boy. He gets so incredibly excited about things that you just cant help but smile and get excited about also. He loves fiercely. He is thankful and shows gratitude. He loves to cuddle and shows great affection for his sister. He's silly, funny, a little bit crazy, and one hex of a cheerleader for other people.

Funny Things He Says:
  • Calls the movie Beauty and the Beast “Booty and the Beast”; he pronounces pool as pahool, cutie as cootie, elevator as alemator, swimsuit as swimswoop, disgusting as dusting, back pack as pack pack, mustache as mushmash.
  • Other phrases he says “That’s so cool”, “It’s gonna be so fun”, “I got a good dea (idea) mom”
  • One morning Dave’s parents asked Madden and I to meet for brunch as Dave was working. During brunch Madden keeps standing up in the booth while eating his pancakes and just trying to mess around. Then he stands up and yells out at the restaurant “Look mom my penis growing, it get bigger!” Of course from my reaction to be quiet and not yell that in public made him repeat it over and over again.  Thankfully my in-laws had chosen a restaurant with a much older crowd so the majority of people around us had a hard time hearing what in the world he was yelling but it was still equally embarrassing for me.
  • He is always asking “What you got?” if someone is eating something or if you go to the pantry. Dave always tries to hide snacks from MJ and gets caught more times than not. Once he hide snack cakes and made himself a brownie sundae with Madden was in his bedroom. Madden later saw the bowl Dave was trying to hide and told him “put it on the table”, so he could see what was in it. Other times he’ll ask to smell your breath then ask “what you eating”.
  • While driving in the car Madden saw a truck full of tree branches and yelled out "Look mom, that's beaver food."
  • Easter weekend after having an East egg hunt at Dave's parents church, that night at bedtime we did our usual bedtime routine. As I cuddled him I told him I love you and responded with I love you too mom and I love candy today too.
  • Liked to watch the movie Puss n Boots and for a while loved to "It's a gold pooper, we're taking it"
  •  Calls his stuffed animals and sometime his friends, his honey's. Will say "Hi honey", "We're are my honey's at?", "You're my honey's"
  • Loves to be "cozy"
  • At one of his friends birthday's he had to use the bathroom and was very noisy. So he said it sounded like a pig, then yelled "There's a pig in the toilet!"
  • Daycare at Rachel's they were all practicing their full names, our daycare provider and her kids last names are Hay. Now when you ask Madden what his full name is he responds with Madden James Dexter Hay.

Proud Mommy Moments:

  • There are many times Madden seems to be very grateful for things, a really shows general gratitude for things he’s given or places we go that truly surprise me that I don’t expect for a kid his age. Madden and Dave came to visit me at work then we went out to lunch. We decided to go to Chick-fila since its fast and they have a small play area for children. He must not have remembered they had a play area when we pulled into the parking lot but once we walked into the restaurant and were waiting in line to order he turned around and saw it. He was so happy to see it that he wrapped his arms around both our legs and said “Oh thank you!!”
  • One evening a Disney World commercial came on the TV and Madden yelled out "I want to go there!" Both Dave and I responded yeah us too buddy, we will go there some day. He wanted to go now so I told him it's kind of expensive so we have to save our money first. Madden then asked us for some "monies" then looked around the house and in mommy's purse for some monies. He ended up finding some coins in the couch and in my purse then said "I find monies can we go now". Awe buddy you not a LOT more monies than that!
  • Madden ended up having 3 piggy banks in his room, a big baseball pig bank and a small baseball pig bank then he found a small plastic one we were given from the credit union and put it in his room also. He realized Harper didn't have a piggy bank in her room or on her dresser so he went into his room and got one of his banks and put it in her room all on his own. He even puts money in it on occasion for her.

Looking Forward To:
  • Starting preschool and his new daycare
  • Trying out new sports and activities...first up soccer
  • Making new friends
  • Watching him grow and develop academically
  • He's really getting into holidays now and understanding them, the holidays get so much more fun and we can't wait to see him help celebrate them all with his litter sister too.
  • We hope to plan/take a family vacation or trip this next year.

Harper 9 months

This little lady is three quarters of a year old!
Time sure is flying with this girl. She is a girl on the move and there ain't no slowing her down.

Age: Nine Months Old

Weight: 17 pounds 15 ounces, 29%ile

Length: 27 3/4 inches, 51%ile

Size: Harper is wearing size 3 diapers, 9 month clothes and pajamas and we have broken out all of her 12 month summer clothes too

Hair: Light brown/blonde

Eyes: She has the most beautiful big blue eyes with long eyelashes. Everyone always complements her on those gorgeous eyes of hers and she sure knows how to work them already.

Health:  Another great month in the books! She only had a couple days with a runny nose and water eyes due to teething but that has been it. We have been so extremely lucky in this department and I really have to give it to using essential oils on a regular bases with her. I roll one little swipe of OnGuard on the bottoms of her feet once every day to help boost her immunity.

Teeth:  This girl has been teething ALL.MONTH.LONG. And not just with one tooth, she’s been working on FOUR teeth at once! Her top two front teeth came through and one on each side of her bottom two middle teeth. Those two bottoms seriously have taken the entire month to come through, they have been some serious hard work. We’ve been using lots of diluted lavender essential oil along her jaw line to help with discomfort and pain as well as natural teething tablets. For the most part she has been in really good spirits despite those darn teeth. That fourth one finally popped through at the very end of this month. She now as six teeth.

Sleeping:  Harper has been a fairly good sleeper this month. At the beginning of the month when she was working on her top two teeth coming through she seemed to wake up earlier in the morning more often than not. There has been a some random nights she might fuss a bit more falling asleep or wake up in the night but it’s not very often. We did have one very bad night where she woke up just after 2:15am and was up off and on till 4:30am then really got pissed off and upset when I tried to lay her back down. She finally passed out in my arms sometime after 5am but it was useless for this mama to go back to sleep, it made for an extremely long day.

Harper usually is ready for bed by 7:30pm and typically sleeps through the night. During the week I usually have to wake her but on weekends she has no problem waking on her own before 6:30am. She is still taking two naps. Her first nap is around 9am and lasts 1.5-2 hours. Her afternoon nap at daycare is usually around 1:30pm but for me on weekends she never will go down for me before 2:30pm. Not sure how that works out.

Eating:  Mommy fail this month on keeping track of new foods. I pretty much just feed her whatever we are eating for dinner just in smaller servings and cut up in smaller pieces. No idea what new foods we introduced this month. She has done a complete 180 in the whole eating department. She now loves food and will pretty much eat or at least try anything I do give her. She prefers to self-feed herself so she can stuff all the food in her mouth on her own. We still eat purees, mostly at daycare and sometimes at home or if we’re out but mainly it’s just whatever we have for dinner or we share our dinners with her to try.  Harper's favorite food by a long shot is Watermelon. Other top faves are dried yogurt melts, sweet potatoes, cheese, pasta, nectarines, blueberries, French fries, Puffs and.....ice cream.

Harper is still breastfeeding. She usually eats about 5 times a day, two bottles at daycare. She still randomly comes homes from daycare with an ounce or two still left in one of her bottles. I’ve only been pumping once at work now which had led to a decrease in the amount I pump but I have a good supply frozen that we should be able to make it to 1 year if everything stays the same.

Movement: Harper is a girl on the move! She crawls everywhere and tries to get into everything. She is definitely getting faster and will really move to get to her mama when she’s tired, ready for bed or ready to eat. She bear crawls a lot too. Loves to do some baby yoga, downward dog and the splits. Before she fully started taking off crawling she started pulling herself up onto her knees and tries to pull herself onto everything. And now she is pulling herself up to standing, although she is still wobbly and it’s more of a standing lean. Gone are the days she will stay still for a diaper or wardrobe change! No matter how quick you try to be or toys you offer she cannot be distracted long enough to lay still. The wrestling matches have begun!

Milestones: Pulling herself onto her knees. Pulling herself up to standing. Lowering her crib. Riding in the shopping cart for the 1st time. Getting four teeth in one month. She can clap her hands. She often waves. Says mama!

Favorite Toys/Activities: She loves non-baby toys, especially things that are big brothers. He has a Melissa & Doug hard lock puzzle that she loves to play with the different locks. She is always after his Nurf bullets or practice golf balls if she can find them on the floor or will bolt after them once she sees them. She still loves bouncing in her jumperoo. Knocking down anything that stacks. Bath time! Grabbing hair, necklaces, drinks, anything in front of her or within reach. Putting her toes in her mouth. Likes to touch/feel/grab faces. Still loves diaper changes and being naked, though she doesn’t want to stay still for them. Watching big brother all of the time!

Dislikes: Has turned into a mamas girl, not a fan of mommy putting her down or walking away from her. Being still for too long, particularly for diaper and clothing changes.

Words:  Says Mama and Dada…..mama is definitely on purpose and when she wants her mama!

Sounds: She squeals and makes high pitched screeching noises, girlfriend knows how to get loud! Still makes lots of raspberries and babbling.

Favorite Moments

  • Girlfriend had her first fit! In the above collage, please note the bottom middle picture. After picking the kids up from daycare, we got home and I immediately fed Harper per the usual. After she was finished I usually always set her down on the floor with toys to play so I can go start dinner. I sat her down and turned around to take TWO steps to turn on the lamp and this girl went into full fledge fit mode. I looked at her and she had dropped to face down on the floor crying! She then looked up at me (not crying), saw I was looking at her and she put her face back into the floor to cry more. She did it two more times until she was done and started playing. It is far too early for THIS to start!!

Monthly Highlights
  • Had her first non-family member babysitter

Superhero Birthday!

My baby is FOUR!!

I'll post a complete Four Year Old update (hopefully) soon, but for now here is a recap of Madden's Superhero Birthday Party.

Picking a birthday theme by an almost four year old is nearly impossible. It changed on a daily basis. It went from a superhero birthday, to race car, to baseballs, then dinosaurs, to Paw Patrol, to PJ Mask, then trains, and back to superheros and all over again and again. Finally he settled on superheros and that is what we went with!

The cake went about the same way as the birthday theme but once we decided on superheros he knew right away he wanted to have both Spider-man and Batman on it. I found a similar cake on Pinterest that I attempted to replicate. Madden chose strawberry for his cake flavor, which was a good thing because his cousin Stella is not a fan of chocolate. I made a fresh strawberry cake with fresh strawberry buttercream frosting. The spiderweb behind the #4 is made from melted chocolate, that was actually Madden's favorite part and the only thing he wanted to eat when it came to cake time. He made up for it the next couple of days since we had leftovers.

Harper even got in on the superhero action, wearing a Superman shirt accessorized with leggings and a bow. It pays to have an older brother and use his old superhero onesies :)

I attempted to have some outdoor activities for the kids, however Mother Nature decided she wanted it to be hotter than Hades outside. You literally started sweating as soon we you stepped outside. The kids didn't mind to long, we Vaporized some Villains with their web-shooters (aka silly string) and played a short time in the Batcave aka the playset tower. We kept the Brick Wall downstairs in the basement for them to knock down with their super human strength and burn some additional energy in the bounce house we have set up in the storage room. They really just love running around the house, chasing each other and playing with balloons.

Our Birthday boy

Our Superhero Crew!!

Such a fun day celebrating this little man! We're looking forward to seeing what four brings him this year. Happy Birthday Madden!!
