Dance Night

This past weekend Madden and I had a little date night to the Annual Mother/Son Formal at the River Center while Daddy and Harper got to spend some one-on-one time. This was out 2nd year going to the event, here is a last years.

Madden was excited to go, he couldn't wait to see his buddies Jackson and Brooks. He even practiced dancing with me earlier in the afternoon, he really liked me picking him up and spinning around with him. He kept saying "daddy look at me, we're dancing!"

My cute little date.

We really liked the set-up at the venue this year, the food was good and the mini cupcakes were delicious. I was a bit disappointed there weren't more crafts for the kids to do like last year and they didn't have balloons out on the dance floor this year either. The littler ones really had a blast with the balloons last year and helped get them out on the dance floor and loosen up.d

Unfortunately as soon as dinner was over MJ was no longer a fan. He told me "Mommy I don't like this place I want to go home." I asked him why he didn't like it and he said it was because it was too loud!  I really had to beg and bribe him into staying and even dancing with me. Luckily I got a good 4 solid songs out of him, three of which were slow songs. He wanted me to hold him and we twirled around the dance floor. Even though it didn't last long it was still sweet and we had a good time. He told me he was tired and wanted to go home to bed so we took off early.

Then of course the next day in the car on our way to daycare he hold me he wanted to go the dance. Maybe next year he'll be more into it and want to stick around longer :)

21 Day Fix Week 3

Week 3 and it's Doubles Week!!

So week 3 has the option to get two workouts in each day for an extra fat burner or more dramatic results. The majority of everyone in our wellness group was on board for it and I was too! Ideally your suppose to them at different times of the day since you continue to burn calories for several more hours after your workout. But life happens as sometimes in order to get them both in you just have to do them back to back. I failed day days to get my workouts in but was able to complete doubles on the other 5 days I did get my workouts in.

This week I actually tried getting up earlier and earlier each day in anticipation of returning to work next week. It was definitely a bit tougher getting two workouts in a day. Friday (Day 19) I had the best of intentions to get my workouts in, I was up at 5:30am but just as I was getting dressed I hear a little voice yelling "Mommy mommy, come cuddle me!" How many more times is he gonna want me to cuddle him or will I have time in the morning, so I cuddle him...and we fall back to sleep. Then Dave's uncle make an unexpected trip to town and took us out to eat. Then daycare had play date at Monkey Joe's for all the kiddos and we picked up ice cream on the way home. Friday was a bust. But I didn't let it get me down and started over on Saturday.

One of the new recipes I tried out this week was Turkey Chili found here. The last time I used ground turkey Dave said whatever it is I had made tasted funny and he didn't like it (which is his feeling about almost anything remotely healthy!) so I made sure to not tell him and actually hid the package from his eyes. When I asked him how it was, he said it was okay but then proceeded to go back for another bowl so I call that a win! I thought it was really good and even added a yellow container of sweet potatoes to my bowl just because I needed another carb for the day and that was even more delicious. It was also toddler approved :)

Turkey Chili, Lean ground beef, whole wheat spaghetti with cottage cheese and parm: tuna wrap on flat out with spinach and avocado dressing and side grapes; and an omelette with sweet potato and turkey bacon.

My Results:
I took all my great "before" pictures on my actual camera which I barely use currently so now i get stuck using sweaty unshowered before and after pics.

I decided to wear the same clothes to be able to compare better. At first glance I really didn't think I could notice much of a different but upon closer look I CAN tell in my tummy, butt and chest.

After just 21 days I lost a total of 5.8 pounds and lost a combined 4.45 inches!!
I am pretty darn happy with my results in just 3 short weeks.

My coach started another wellness group challenge for the month of February which started on the 1st and I decided to join in for Round 2. I figured it would be great motivation to keep going through what could be a tough week returning to work. I see myself making too many excuses to not get up early workout, say I'll go to the gym over my lunch break but not go,  order lunch with my coworkers, or not prep any lunches because I'm "too busy" or "too tired". Being in another group challenge will help keep me accountable for my workouts and healthy eating, plus I really want to start fitting into some of my non-maternity pants!!!

21 Day Fix Week 2

Week 2 is in the books!

I’m trying to get my workouts in before the kiddos get up in the morning but it doesn’t always happen. Luckily Miss Harper typically likes to sleep in till 8/9:00am and I can let MJ sleep in on Tuesday/Thursdays as they are non-daycare days right now. Nap time is hit or miss with little miss thang. There have been a few days I didn’t get up early enough to workout and I get interrupted multiple times but thankfully the workouts are mom friendly and I can pick up right where I left off.

This week, starting the workouts over, I definitely am feeling stronger than last!  It’s crazy how much of a difference I feel in just one week.

This week I cooked a few chicken breast in the crockpot to keep on hand for meals. My favorite was my "Chipolte salad" which included mixed greens, brown rice, shredded chicken, 21DF approved creamy avocado dressing, and a little salsa. Totally hit the spot and filled that Chipolte craving. This plan has also gotten me to try out almond butter and I gotta say I am a huge fan! So yummy on a banana, with apple slices or in with my Shakeology.

Clockwise from Top Left: Steak with mushrooms, peppers, and blue cheese serves with sweet potato with cinnamon and raw veggies; 2 eggs on whole wheat toast with avocado; whole wheat waffle with peanut butter, turkey bacon and cuties; banana with almond butter and coffee; taco salad.
Then pizza happened again.

We had an impromptu lunch date with the in-laws at Happy Joe's Jungle Bungle so MJ could run off some energy. Thankfully you are allowed pizza to swap out a meal with once a week.

Saturday night Dave and I had a much needed/delayed date night out with dinner and a movie. We went to dinner at Tantra which is Asian Fusion, it is really delicious fresh food. I had a Ginger Beef Stir Fry with brown rice AND a glass of wine (which is also allowed on the eating plan!). It was the perfect amount of food and I didn't feel overly full or heavy from the food. So good! We saw the movie Sisters with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (highly recommend, seriously funny!) and we skipped the popcorn :)

21 Day Fix Week 1

I was just recently introduced to the 21 Day Fix by Beachbody from a friend of mine whose been using the program for the past year and became a Coach. She decided to start a 21 Day Wellness Challenge group in January on Facebook for anyone who might be interested in joining who wanted a healthier and more balanced life.

Getting closer to the countdown of going back to work I emailed her for more information about the program. I have been wanting to get back into an exercise routine and shed a couple more pregnancy pounds prior to going back to work in hopes to have a few more regular clothing options and start packing up those maternity clothes. We would be doing the workouts and following the eating plan together while holding each other accountable. The program sounded pretty doable and a great way to ease back into things. What I really loved was the idea of doing it with a group for that accountability and having to check in everyday so I went ahead and decided to try it out.

I just completed week 1 and let me tell you I am out of shape! The program comes with a DVD of 7 different 30 minute workouts, one of each day of the week. I can do them in the convenience of my living room, or my case basement, and all I need is two sets of weights (I don't have a yoga mat that is suggested). The first 4 days I was so completely sore all over. Working muscles I haven't worked for awhile!! But I have to admit at day 5 it was starting to feel good again.

The workout schedule includes
Monday: Total Cardio Fix
Tuesday: Upper Body Fix
Wednesday: Lower Body Fix
Thursday: Pilates
Friday: Cardio
Saturday: Dirty Thirty (Sweat session!)
Sunday: Yoga

There is also a Bonus 10 minute Abs that can be added on to any of the days as well as a Bonus DVD with an additional 30 minute workout.

The eating plan was a bit more of an adjust for my the first couple days. I think I was trying over complicate things. The containers are completely deceiving!! They look so tiny when you're looking at them, I was thinking I was going to be starving the entire 21 days. But fear not, the portions are on point and it helps that you're suppose to eat every 2-3 hours.

A few of my meals from the week: Lots of eggs! Clockwise starting at the top Left: Hard boiled egg, turkey bacon, whole wheat toast, blackberries; mixed berries; spaghetti zoodles; eggs with sauted sweet potato, mushroom, onions and cilantro; egg white omelette with spinach; apple with almond butter.
The eating plan is all about portion control and clean healthy foods. I think my entire maternity leave the only vegetable I've eaten are french fries....those count as a vegetable right?! I've made some freezer meals I stocked up on prior to having Harper and things people have dropped off or made for us. But we have been eating out a lot, picking up fast food or having pizza. Nothing good for this waistline, so it definitely have been a challenge this week to get change mindsets.

One thing I am really proud of is that I finally made Zoodles (zucchini noodles) with marinara sauce, chicken sausage and a little bit of cheese....OMG they were so delicious!! I will definitely be trying out different recipes with them. I've had a few slip ups and cheats. Of course on day 2 Dave's parents came over and brought pizza, I held strong and didn't have any even though on the plan I could have. Then two days later his mother send over M&M chocolate chip cookies, 'because they're Madden's favorite"! Those I cheated with :( but I only ate 2 two different days and not more than that or have it ruin my eating habits the rest of the day. Then on Saturday Dave ordered Happy Joe's pizza....yes pizza again....and I had my allotted amount for the program, although it actually made me feel gross.

Overall, after one week I am actually feeling great!! I feel like the bloat is gone, I've feeling leaner, stronger, and a but more energy. Looking forward to see what week 2 brings.

Big Boy Room

Madden is officially moved into his big boy room!!

We've been talking to him about his new room for months. We started out by first asking him if he even wanted to move rooms and what he wanted his room to be like. He told us on multiple occasions he did in fact want to move into the other bedroom next to his and he wanted it to a baseball room (go figure!).

Dave originally wanted his new baseball room to be Madden's birthday present, we hit a few snags with the baseball field print we wanted to use for behind his bed. Plans had to be changed a few times, we had to change multiple local printers,  the prints got delayed and we ended up changing which field it was going to have to be a few times and just ordering a Fathead over the local printers. BUT alas, it was FINALLY delivered last Thursday. Dave really wanted to wait to move him in until the room was pretty much complete, we still have a few minor things to do like putting up shelves on the wall his dresser is on and a new lamp but we were able to get the fatheads up on the wall Friday night and moved MJ in that night.

My husband was all over making decisions for this room since it's right up his alley. Aside from the Man Cave, I think this is the only other room he's had strong opinions on :) Even though Dave is a huge Chicago Cubs fan, he has said multiple times he doesn't want to push his child into liking any one team, as long as it's not the Cardinals LOL. I could care less about specific teams, it's all about the love of the game and the sport, right?! So we settled on a couple different teams.

Headboard Decal: Fathead of Boston Red Sox Fenway Park
Player Decals: Fathead
End tables: Dave's DIY project, milk creates from Home Depot - gorilla glued together and painted a dark brown.
Bedding: Bed Bath and Beyond - 20% off coupon
Additional Sheets: MLB sheets, gift from Uncle Mike
Curtains - Reused from his old room
Rug: Target
Wire Basket: Gordman's
Dresser - $40 from Salvation Army, Dave refunished to make the milk create side tables
Dresser Handles: Hobby Lobby, glove, bat and baseball pulls
Mirror: Hobby Lobby - used 40% off coupon!
'All Star' Wall decor: Hobby Lobby - 50% off
Slugger Picture Frame: Gordman's

All other sports decor is curiosity of Dave's baseball collection.

Madden's First Night in his big boy room was a little bumpy starting off.
He was really excited to sleep in his new room and we had our usual nightly bedtime duel of him getting out of bed and opening his door with an excuse not to sleep a good 3 or 4 times. "Mommy I need to go potty, again", "Mommy I want to give you a hug", "I want to kiss you", or "There's a monster is my room".

Then he didn't want to sleep in his big full size bed and wanted to go sleep back in his toddler bed in his old room. He found his sleeping bag and decided if he couldn't go back to his toddler bed he would sleep in the sleeping bag. Which I was totally okay with. Of course he then woke up just after midnight crying because he was in a new room. I went in and asked him if he wanted to sleep in his big bed and he said yes! He immediately went right back to sleep. I on the other hand was positive he would either wake up again crying because he was in a new room or fall out of bed so I woke up a billion times to check the monitor. I am happy to report he did not! He did wait up at 6:00am ready to party but at least he slept in his bed and new room!

This first nap in his new room was a similar experience. He came out of his room a few times but instead of wanting to sleep in his toddler bed he just opted for the sleeping bag. Night number two went phenomenal! He did not come out of his room once at bedtime, fell right to sleep and did not wake up the entire night, AND he even slept in until 8:00am Sunday morning!! It felt awesome!

Now that he has been in his big boy room for a week now, he has done very well adjusting to his new room and bed. He absolutely LOVES his baseball room and jumping on his bed. He likes mommy being able to lay in bed with him to read books or snuggle in with him first thing in the morning to wake him up. He has fallen out of bed once unfortunately and got a big goose egg on his forehead from hitting the side tables but other than that is has been smooth sailing so far.
Just hope it continues....

Kitchen Update

Adding a back splash in our kitchen has been on my To Do List and list of Goals for quite some time now.....quite possibly since we moved in after building :/  I finally took matters into my own hands and got the job done this Spring! Sometimes a girl just needs to do things herself in order to get things done :)

Here is the Before picture
I wanted a back splash that I could actually do myself and didn't have to purchase five thousand supplies that I would probably only use once AND that was dumbie proof, if possible. No ten billion tile pieces. No special cutting equipment. No grout. No special grout tools. No mess and no messy cleanup. Really no special skills needed. :)

I had looked online for awhile and walked through the kitchen section of the hardware stores a few times looking at ideas. Then decided on these Fasade panels. They are faux tin tile panels, aka plastic!! When I saw them on sale I went for it and bought them and decided right then and there this project was getting done.

My handy helper, along with diaper crack!
After doing all my measuring I only needed 7 panels. I decided to go with the Oil-rubbed Bronze since the majority of all our hardware throughout the house is oil-rubbed bronze and it was my fave out of all the options. I also purchased 1 end piece, 1 corner piece, and 2 rolls of the double sided tape in lieu of the caulk. I was able to cut the panels after measuring and marking off my cuts with kitchen scissors. I watched a tutorial or two on-line and that was it. It was that easy! Took me only a couple hours and I completely finished the project in one evening.

After picture with finished back splash.
I love how it turned out! It definitely makes the kitchen feel finished. Plus it is so much easier to clean any baking splatters or mishaps off than scrubbing it off the paint.

New Year, New Goals

Finally got around to finishing up my Goals for 2015. I really meant to get them up right around the actual New Year, but life gets in the way.

I've realized that since becoming a Mommy these past two years I've really focused a lot on being just that. It's hard to leave your little one but this Mommy to some "me time" and to get reacquainted with her girlfriends that have been far too long neglected. I'm looking forward to rekindling my friendships and being Brenda again.

I also want to focus more on my marriage this year. We both have such busy lives that it can be so easy to get a bit disconnected at times. I get mad or annoyed at things that are out of my control. I want to learn to communicate better as a partner and start dating my husband again.

There's also a couple very important items we never got around to checking off the list last year that I want to make a priority to get taken care this year no matter what.

Looking forward to seeing what 20015 has in store for us!

Surprise Birthday Weekend

Last weekend I was surprised with a family weekend away to the Wisconsin Dells for my birthday by my husband!!
Granted I knew we were going somewhere and we had previously talked about going to stay at a water park in the Dells but Dave wanted to make all the plans himself and for MJ and I to just sit back and enjoy the ride. Plus he wanted to help me mark "2014 Family Trip" off my list of goals for this year.

Helping mommy open gifts

I took Friday off work and Dave worked a half day, which for him is till 10 so as soon as he got home and changed we were on the rode before 11:00am! We took a semi-short pit stop on the way to The House on the Rock. Neither of us had been since we were youngins, all I remembered was a giant carousel and creepy dolls. It was much bigger than I recall and we didn't even go through the entire house.

Lovin the Giant Carousel!

How Funny Are You?
I got Hilarious and MJ got A Gas, Dave refused to play because he "doesn't need to be told how funny he is"

The carousel of dolls are still creepy by the way!
I love waking up to this beautiful boy on my birthday morning and all his cuddles!

We stayed at a wonderful resort with an indoor water park, Chula Vista Resort. The water park was perfect for MJ, it had a great sized toddler area. It included a lazy river, 4 large water slide, 3 racing, a log ride, and 3 small slides that included a play area for bigger kids as well as a large pool with basketball hoops and lilly pads. It had a lot going on!
  Water Park Fun!

Watching this kid have the time of his life playing in the water and going down the slides was the best part of the trip. He had so much fun and his smile was completely contagious. Every time he went down the slides was the like first time he went down, flapping him arms and pointing his toes in delight!

He wasn't too thrilled with having to hold still for a picture with his mama.

Saturday night we went out to dinner and drinks at the Moose Jaw. Their Apple Ale was the best apple beer I've ever tasted (pumpkin was really good too)! Even Dave thought it was really good and got a jug of the apple to go.

Madden had so much fun on our trip that by time we left on Sunday, he passed out in the car in under 5 minutes. We didn't even make it to the highway and stayed asleep for almost 2 hours of the drive home.

My husband sure drives me crazy half the time but he does know how to make a girl feel special for her birthday! Memories to last a lifetime :)

My Little Halloweenie

I can't believe the last week in October brought us a few 70 degree weather days! Madden and I, along with the puppies, were able to enjoy some extra days outside enjoying our last weekend of the month. He played in leaves for the first time. MJ was definitely unsure about the huge pile I raked up and what to do, he gave me that "your crazy mom" look as I demonstrated jumping into the pile.

But he quickly loved the idea of throwing them as me a chasing me around.

Sunday we went to Boo at the Zoo, along with almost everyone else in the QCA as it was another gorgeous day. It was crazy busy but we had a blast.
Madden went as a little Golfer for Halloween this year. Oh how I love this outfit!!

Madden's favorite part of the zoo this year was once again the Loin! He was sleeping when we first got to the exhibit but woke up and actually started Roaring for the second year in a row!! All the kids loves it. He also loved the giraffes, the tortoise, monkeys, and the zebras. One particular zebra decided to put on a show for us and show off to everyone, it was great.

On our way out of the zoo we came across Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Kids were going up and getting their pictures taken, I really didn't think Madden would want to, I thought he would be a little scared of them but boy was I wrong.
He was so excited!!
He ran right up to them (granted they were inflatable) with the biggest smile on his face and cheering! I told him to turn around and back up next to Mickey for a picture and he sat right down and kept trying to inch back closer and closer.

Dave's parents invited us to Trunk or Treat at their church Wednesday night, which is just a block away from my work. Madden's buddy Violet wanted to go too for her first time out for Halloween so we all went together.

Violet went as a little Rhino.

Trunk or Treat even had games inside the gym before going outside for the treats. My little golfer actually got to golf, he whacked a couple balls halfway across the gym...and was so excited about it! We decorated treat bags and saw a puppet show. They had pumpkin bowling and a no-hands doughnut eating game which MJ majorly cheated on.
Once we got home he poured out his Halloween bucket to check out his loot.

Davenport had their Trick or Treat on Thursday night so Madden and I headed over to Jordan and Steph's house to go out with all the kids. They have an awesome neighborhood for it!

The cutest kids on the block!!
Golfer, Princess Ana, Queen Elsa, Chili Pepper, Olaf, and a Ninja

First stop, Grandma!
Halloween night we were suppose to go over to the Jones to trick or treat in Bettendorf with them and the Vincent's but along with treats at daycare pink eye was also given out. He woke up Friday morning with his eye completely swollen shut so we opted to keep him home away from the other kiddos :( On the bright side Madden and I watched movies and cuddled all day long so it was still a win for us.

Hope everyone had a Safe, Healthy and Happy Halloween!
